Robots for the Guts
At the Sheffield Biomedical Robotics Lab we are working to develop the next generation of medical and surgical technologies combining robotics and bioengineering, for custom, less invasive and less disruptive therapies. We will demonstrate a soft implantable robot that aims to grow tissues and organs, such as an esophagus or bowel, inside our body to repair or reconstruct them. This robot applies a ‘massage’ to tissues which stimulates their growth, reacting intelligently to the local needs of the tissue. You’ll have the chance to see how it works and how such technologies open new paths to the future of medicine.
