Industrial Robots – a helping hand

Industrial robots and people are normally kept well separated for safety, like any large machine they can be dangerous if not treated with respect.  Physical guards or cages are used to ensure that people cannot be accidentally injured but this limits the way in which robots could help people to do their work by for example carrying hot or heavy items. In the lab at Cranfield we are working on new ways of allowing people to safely get much closer to robots and work together in a way with which they feel, and are, safe and comfortable. This means robots can really help people at work not replace them. We also show how drones from our UAV laboratory showing how complex systems can interact.
